Heaven's Gate is one of Zhangjiajie's most impressive attractions and one of China's most iconic natural landmarks. Located on Tianmen Mountain, it is an enormous natural opening in the rock — positioned high on the mountain and surrounded by dramatic scenery.
Famous for its 999-step stairway — the so-called "stairway to heaven" — Heaven's Gate combines nature, engineering and panoramic views, making it one of the most memorable experiences in the entire region.
What is Heaven's Gate?
Heaven's Gate is a natural cave formed in the mountain, creating a gigantic arch that passes through the rock. The opening stands over 100 metres tall and is considered one of the most impressive natural formations in China.
Beyond its geological significance, the site also holds cultural meaning — symbolically associated with the connection between heaven and earth in Chinese tradition.
How to get to Heaven's Gate
Access is via Tianmen Mountain, one of Zhangjiajie's main attractions. There are two main ways to get up:
- Cable car (Tianmen Mountain Cable Car) — one of the longest in the world, with panoramic views of the mountain
- Road of 99 Bends — a winding mountain road that climbs to the base of the stairway
Both options are attractions in themselves and form part of the overall experience.
The Stairway to Heaven (999 steps)
To reach Heaven's Gate, you need to climb the famous 999-step stairway. The ascent is challenging, but it offers a unique experience — with breathtaking views of the mountain and the rock formation itself.
There is also an indoor escalator built into the mountain to assist with part of the climb.
How long to spend
Plan on half a day to visit Tianmen Mountain and Heaven's Gate at a comfortable pace, including the climb, walking and photos.
What to expect
Visiting Heaven's Gate is a combination of adventure and contemplation. The sheer scale of the natural formation, combined with the stairway climb, creates an experience unlike anywhere else in China.
The surrounding views are vast — cliffs, forests and clouds forming a truly unique setting.
Practical tips
