For those who want a more complete, immersive experience, Bunk'Art 1 is larger, more impactful and shows the communist period in Albania more broadly.

For a first trip to the Albanian capital, I would prioritise Bunk'Art 2 if you only have 1 day in the city. It's close to Skanderbeg Square, requires less travel and combines well with other attractions in the centre.
If you have 2 days in Tirana or want a deeper visit, I would also include Bunk'Art 1. It's further out, but offers a longer, more immersive experience inside a larger bunker.
The biggest mistake when visiting Bunk'Art is not understanding the difference between the two sites. Many people search only for "Bunk'Art" and only later realise there are two different museums, in different parts of the city.

Is Bunk'Art worth visiting?

Even if you're not especially fond of traditional museums, Bunk'Art draws attention through the very space it's installed in. The feeling of entering a real bunker already makes the visit different from other attractions in Tirana.
What is Bunk'Art?
Bunk'Art is a museum project created inside former bunkers built during Enver Hoxha's government.
For decades, Albania built thousands of bunkers across the country as part of the communist regime's defence, control and isolation policy.
Today, these spaces have been turned into museums that help explain themes such as surveillance, propaganda, everyday life, political persecution, the secret police and historical memory.
The project is divided into two main sites in Tirana: Bunk'Art 1 and Bunk'Art 2. Both cover the communist period, but each has a different focus, size and location.
Bunk'Art 1 or Bunk'Art 2: which one to visit?
Bunk'Art 1, larger and further from the centre, occupies a former bunker built to protect the regime's leadership in case of war. The visit is longer and more immersive, with underground corridors, historic rooms, preserved settings and exhibitions on Albania's 20th-century history, including the communist period.
Bunk'Art 2, located in central Tirana, is close to Skanderbeg Square and easier to fit into a short itinerary. It's smaller, more direct and focuses on the history of the secret police, surveillance, political repression and state control during the communist regime.
If you only have a few hours in Tirana, choose Bunk'Art 2.
If you have more time and want a more complete experience, visit Bunk'Art 1.
If you really enjoy history and want a better understanding of Albania's communist period, it's worth considering the combined ticket to visit both.
Bunk'Art 1
Bunk'Art 1, located on the outskirts of Tirana, is the project's larger, more immersive site. The museum sits inside a large underground bunker and requires more time both to get there and to visit.
The experience at Bunk'Art 1 is more intense because the space is larger, the route is longer and the underground setting reinforces the sense of isolation from the communist period.
The visit passes through corridors, preserved rooms, historic exhibitions, documents, objects and installations that help you understand Albania under communist rule.
For anyone interested in history, the Cold War, closed regimes and military architecture, Bunk'Art 1 tends to be the more impactful site.
Bunk'Art 2
Bunk'Art 2, located in central Tirana, is the more practical site for most travellers. It's close to Skanderbeg Square, Et'hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower and Tirana Castle.
Bunk'Art 2's focus is the history of the secret police, the surveillance system and political repression in communist Albania.
The visit is more compact than Bunk'Art 1, but still very powerful. The museum passes through underground corridors and rooms with documents, objects, accounts and explanations of the control exercised by the state during the regime.
For a 1-day Tirana itinerary, I would choose Bunk'Art 2, because it delivers important historical context without requiring much travel.
How to get to Bunk'Art
Bunk'Art 2, is in central Tirana, on Rruga Abdi Toptani, close to Skanderbeg Square. From the square, you can get there on foot in a few minutes. It's the easiest option for those exploring the centre on foot.
Bunk'Art 1, is on the outskirts of the city, on Rruga Fadil Deliu, near the Dajti Ekspres cable car area. The journey can be made by taxi, car or city bus. The Center–Porcelan line, also known as L11, is often mentioned as an option for reaching the area. A bus ticket in Tirana costs around 40 ALL, approximately US$0.50.
Taxi or ride-hailing app, can be a simpler option for getting to Bunk'Art 1, especially if you have little time or don't want to rely on local buses.
Rental car, also works, but isn't necessary for visiting Bunk'Art 2, since it's in the centre and can be reached on foot.
How the visit works
The visit to Bunk'Art is self-guided, following corridors and exhibition rooms inside the bunker.
The route passes through preserved settings, historic panels, artistic installations, photographs, documents and objects related to the communist period.
At Bunk'Art 1, the visit tends to be longer and involves more walking within the underground space. Since the bunker is larger, it's worth allowing more time and taking it slowly.
At Bunk'Art 2, the route is more compact and easy to fit between other central attractions. It works very well at midday or in the afternoon, after visiting Skanderbeg Square.
The interior of the bunkers can be cooler than the street, especially on hot days. For some people, it can also be a more intense space, because of the enclosed corridors, low lighting and heavy historical content.

The combined ticket can be worthwhile if you plan to visit both museums in Tirana. If you're only visiting one site, buy the individual ticket.
Opening hours
Bunk'Art 1, according to recent official information, is open every day, with hours that can vary between weekdays and weekends. A current reference is Monday to Thursday from 9:30am to 4:30pm, and Friday to Sunday from 9:30am to 5:30pm.
Bunk'Art 2, according to recent official information, is open every day, generally from 9:30am to 6:30pm.
As opening hours can change with the season, holidays or events, confirm before you go, especially if you plan to visit late in the day.
How long to spend
- Allow 1 to 1.5 hours to visit Bunk'Art 2.
- For Bunk'Art 1, allow 2 to 3 hours, factoring in the visit and the travel time from central Tirana.
If you want to visit both on the same day, it's best to start with Bunk'Art 1 in the morning and leave Bunk'Art 2 for the afternoon, once you're back in the centre.
If you only have 1 day in Tirana, I would choose just one site so as not to overload the itinerary.
Best time to visit
- Morning, is the best option for visiting Bunk'Art 1 at a relaxed pace, since it's further out and requires travel.
- Midday, can work well for Bunk'Art 2, especially if you're already in central Tirana and want to fit in an indoor visit between walks around the city.
- Hot days, are also good for visiting Bunk'Art, because the interior of the bunkers tends to be cooler than the city's open areas.
- Late afternoon, can be risky if you haven't confirmed opening hours, especially for Bunk'Art 1, which requires more time for the visit and the journey.
What I would prioritise when visiting Bunk'Art
If I only had 1 day in Tirana, I would prioritise Bunk'Art 2, because it's in the centre and combines better with Skanderbeg Square, Et'hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower, Tirana Castle and Blloku.
If I had 2 days in Tirana, I would put Bunk'Art 1 on the itinerary, mainly for the more immersive experience and the size of the bunker.
If the focus of the trip is understanding Albania's communist history, both museums make sense. In that case, the combined ticket can be a good choice.
The most important thing is not to treat Bunk'Art as just a curiosity. It helps give context to many things you'll see during the rest of your trip through Albania.
What can be optional in this itinerary
Bunk'Art 1, can be optional if you only have 1 day in Tirana or if you don't want to leave the centre. Even though it's very interesting, it requires more travel and more time.
Bunk'Art 2, can be optional if you've already visited Bunk'Art 1 and have little time in the centre, but for most travellers it's the more practical option.
Audio guide, can be optional if you plan to read the panels carefully. For those who want more context, it can help a lot.
Visiting both on the same day, can be optional and is only worth it if you really enjoy history. For a lighter itinerary, choose just one site.
Combining with Dajti Ekspres, can be interesting for those visiting Bunk'Art 1, since the cable car area is nearby. But this combination requires more time and works better with a 2-day Tirana itinerary.
Mistakes to avoid when visiting Bunk'Art
The first mistake is confusing Bunk'Art 1 with Bunk'Art 2. They're in different places and require different amounts of visiting time.
Another mistake is leaving Bunk'Art 1 for the end of the day without confirming opening hours. Since it's further out, any delay can disrupt the visit.
It's also worth avoiding visiting both museums on the same day if you don't like heavy itineraries. The content is intense, and doing both back-to-back can make the day tiring.
At Bunk'Art 2, the mistake is rushing in. Even though it's smaller, it has plenty of information and deserves time to read through.
For those with claustrophobia or who feel uncomfortable in enclosed spaces, it's worth considering that the museums are inside bunkers, with underground corridors and little natural light.
