Bunk'Art is one of Tirana's most striking attractions and one of the best places to understand Albania's recent history. Installed inside former bunkers built during the communist regime, the space combines history museum, artistic installation and political memory.
There are two main sites: Bunk'Art 1, located on the outskirts of Tirana, and Bunk'Art 2, more central, close to Skanderbeg Square. For those with limited time in the city, Bunk'Art 2 is usually the more practical choice. For a more complete and immersive experience, Bunk'Art 1 is larger and more impactful.
Is Bunk'Art worth visiting?
Yes. Bunk'Art is worth visiting because it shows an essential side of Albanian history, especially the period of isolation and repression under the communist regime. The visit helps you understand why Tirana has so many contrasts between old architecture, communist-era buildings and revitalised modern areas.
It is a different kind of attraction from the city's squares and churches. The underground setting, narrow corridors and preserved rooms make for a more intense and educational experience.
What is Bunk'Art?
Bunk'Art is a museum project created inside former bunkers built during Enver Hoxha's government. For decades, Albania built thousands of bunkers across the country as part of the communist regime's defence and isolation policy.
Today, these spaces have been transformed into museums that explore themes such as surveillance, propaganda, everyday life, political persecution and the country's recent history.
Bunk'Art 1 or Bunk'Art 2: which one to visit?
Bunk'Art 1
Larger, further from the centre, and occupies a former nuclear bunker built to shelter the regime's leadership. The visit is longer and more immersive, with underground corridors, historic rooms and exhibitions on the communist period.
Bunk'Art 2
Located in central Tirana, close to Skanderbeg Square. Smaller and easier to fit into a 1-day itinerary. The focus is on the history of the secret police, surveillance and political repression.
If you only have a few hours in Tirana, choose Bunk'Art 2. If you have more time and want a more complete experience, visit Bunk'Art 1.
How to get to Bunk'Art
Bunk'Art 2
Located in central Tirana, a few minutes' walk from Skanderbeg Square. The easiest option for those doing a city-centre itinerary.
Bunk'Art 1
Located on the outskirts of the city, near the Dajti Ekspres cable car area. The journey can be made by taxi, city bus or car. Bus line L11, also known as Porcelan, departs from the central area and takes around 20 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. The ticket costs around 40 ALL.
How the visit works
The visit is self-guided, following corridors and exhibition rooms inside the bunker. The route passes through preserved spaces, historic panels, artistic installations and documents related to the communist period.
At Bunk'Art 1, the visit is usually longer and involves more movement within the underground space. At Bunk'Art 2, the route is more compact and easier to fit between other central attractions.
