Lago di Braies was one of the places I most wanted to see in the Dolomites. It's one of those places that shows up so often in photos and videos that I already had a very clear picture of what to expect, but being there in person was still different.
I visited the lake at the end of June 2026, leaving early from San Vigilio di Marebbe and driving straight to Braies. My priority was to arrive in the morning, before the area got busier.
The traditional boathouse and the mountains reflected in the water make up that classic Lago di Braies scene, but what I liked most was walking along the shore and seeing how the scenery changes once you move away from the area where most people stay.

The full loop around Lago di Braies is roughly 3.5 to 3.6 km. Depending on pace and stops, I'd set aside between one and one and a half hours just to walk around the lake. The official Alto Adige tourism website describes the route as a simple panoramic walk, although one side has steps and narrower stretches.
Why Visit Lago di Braies?
Braies is probably one of the best-known lakes in the Dolomites, and once you reach the shore you quickly understand why. The water changes tone with the light, the mountains almost close in the whole scene, and the historic boathouse sits right at the start of the lake.
Even so, I wouldn't treat Braies as just a place to grab the classic photo and leave. One of the best parts of the visit was walking along the shore, where the crowds thin out and other angles of the mountains and the water appear.
That's what made the place exceed my expectations. I already knew Braies' famous image, but I didn't expect to find so many different perspectives just by walking around the lake.
Is It Worth Visiting Lago di Braies?
For me, it's well worth it. Braies is one of the most touristy places in the Dolomites and can get quite busy, especially in summer, but that wouldn't stop me from visiting.
What makes the difference is organization. Arriving early and setting aside time to walk along the shore made my experience much better than just making a quick stop.
If I went back, I'd arrive as early as possible again, spend some time near the boathouse and then keep walking to see other parts of the lake.
How to Get to Lago di Braies
Lago di Braies is in the Valle di Braies, in the Dolomites region.
On my trip, I left San Vigilio di Marebbe by car and went straight to the lake in the morning.
I was doing a road trip through the Dolomites, so this was the most practical option, since I then continued the itinerary to other lakes in the region.
For those staying in other parts of the Dolomites, access usually goes through the Val Pusteria area before entering the Valle di Braies.
There are also public transport options, especially during the tourist season. During the regulated summer period, the official Valle di Braies mobility website recommends arriving by public transport, bicycle or on foot, in addition to vehicles with a valid reservation or permit.
Do You Need to Book Parking at Lago di Braies?
It depends on the time of your trip. When I visited Braies at the end of June 2026, I didn't need to book in advance, but the rules change during summer.
In 2026, the main regulation period runs from July 1 to September 15. During that window, between 9am and 4pm, car access to the Valle di Braies depends on an online reservation or a valid transit permit. Outside that period, there's no such access restriction.
That's why it's worth checking the rules that apply to the exact date of your visit. Until June 30 and again from September 16 onward, the official Valle di Braies mobility website states that the online reservation required during the regulated period isn't necessary.
How Much Does Parking at Lago di Braies Cost in 2026?
The parking cost varies depending on the time of your trip, the parking area chosen and the type of access.
During the regulated period between July 1 and September 15, 2026, the official Valle di Braies mobility system offers a combined €44 ticket for vehicles under 2.20 meters in height.
That ticket includes:
- a transit permit for the regulated period
- parking
- shuttle transport, when needed
- a €22 voucher for participating local restaurants or shops on advance bookings
The €22 voucher is offered on advance bookings and isn't included with same-day reservations.
There are also parking areas near the lake with their own rates and conditions. The P4 lot, for example, lists a €40 ticket, with a reserved space and a €16 food voucher.
So before the trip, it's worth checking which parking area is available for your visit date, the price charged and what's included in the ticket.
Can You Arrive Before 9am Without a Reservation?
During the regulated period, there's an important detail: the official information states that arriving before 9am is allowed, but it doesn't guarantee a spot.
If the parking areas near the lake are already full or booked, access may not be guaranteed even before that time. That's why, if I traveled between July and mid-September and Braies were a priority, I'd book in advance rather than rely solely on the strategy of arriving before 9am.
When I went at the end of June, the situation was different because my visit happened before the start of 2026's main regulation period.
What to Do at Lago di Braies
My main recommendation is to walk. The area near the boathouse is beautiful and deserves some time, but it's only part of the experience. As you continue along the shore, other angles of the water and mountains appear.
The full loop is roughly 3.5 to 3.6 km. The route crosses different types of terrain; one side is flatter, while the other has some steps and narrower stretches.
You don't need to complete the whole loop to enjoy Braies. On my visit, the most important thing was not staying only in the best-known area, because walking part of the shore already reveals different perspectives and quieter spots.
How Long to Spend at Lago di Braies
I'd set aside roughly 2 to 3 hours.
That's enough time to arrive without rushing, take in the boathouse area, walk along the shore, take photos and enjoy different parts of the lake.
If you want to complete the whole loop, I'd allow at least an hour to an hour and a half just for the walk, mainly because you'll likely stop several times.
The official distance published for the loop is around 3.5 to 3.6 km. I'd avoid visiting Braies in a rush, because even though it's possible to arrive, take photos and leave quickly, that would significantly reduce the experience.
Best Time to Visit Lago di Braies
I'd arrive early again.
Braies gets progressively busier as the morning goes on, especially during the summer season.
Arriving early also changes what it's like to walk along the shore. There's less crowding near the best-known spots and it's easier to stop and take in the view.
On my trip, putting Braies as the first stop of the day worked well.
After it, I continued to Lago di Dobbiaco, Lago di Landro and Lago di Misurina, which were calmer stops.
If I repeated this itinerary, Braies would still be the first stop.
Can You Walk All the Way Around Lago di Braies?
Yes. There's a loop around the lake of roughly 3.5 to 3.6 km. The walk isn't technically difficult, but it isn't completely flat the whole way.
The west shore has simpler stretches, while the east shore has steps and narrower sections.
That's why I'd wear comfortable shoes even if you don't plan to do a long hike.
I also wouldn't worry about completing the full loop just to say you did the circuit. If you're short on time, walking part of the shore and turning back already lets you see much more of the lake than staying near the boathouse.
Can You Visit Lago di Braies Without a Car?
Yes.
During the tourist season there are public transport services to the Valle di Braies, and during the regulated period they become especially useful.
Between July 1 and September 15, 2026, from 9am to 4pm, the regulations allow access to the Valle di Braies by public transport, on foot, by bicycle or with a valid reservation or permit for vehicles.
If the goal is to see only Lago di Braies, public transport can also be a good alternative.
In my case, the car made more sense because Braies was just the first stop of an itinerary that continued to three other lakes.
What to Expect
I'd go knowing that Braies is famous and busy, without expecting to find a completely empty lake during the tourist season. That doesn't mean, though, that the experience has to be limited to the crowd near the boathouse.
It was by walking that I started liking the place even more. At every stretch, the relationship between the water and the mountains changes: at some points you look straight at the huge rock walls; at others, you see a larger part of the lake.
For me, that was the main reason not to treat Braies as just a photo stop. The classic image is beautiful, but the whole lake deserves to be explored.

- Arrive in the morning, ideally as early as possible

- Don't rely solely on arriving before 9am during the regulated period
- Set aside at least 2 to 3 hours to enjoy the lake without rushing
- Walk beyond the boathouse area
- Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk along the shore
- If driving, check which parking area you're booking and what the ticket includes
