Topkapi Palace is one of Istanbul's main attractions for anyone wanting to understand the Ottoman period. For nearly four centuries, the complex served as the sultans' residence and the political and administrative centre of the Ottoman Empire.
Topkapi isn't a single building. The visit moves through courtyards, halls, gardens, pavilions, collections and the Imperial Harem, with areas that become progressively more private as you move deeper into the complex.
So don't plan Topkapi as a quick visit. Allow roughly 3 to 4 hours.

Is Topkapi Palace worth visiting?
For anyone who enjoys history, architecture, or wants to better understand the Ottoman court, yes.
The complex was first built by order of Sultan Mehmed II after the conquest of Constantinople and was expanded over the centuries.
Its layout helps explain how the court worked: the earliest areas were tied to access and administration, while the innermost spaces were reserved for the sultan, the imperial family and private life.
Besides the historic buildings, Topkapi has gardens, collections and terraces with views over the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara.
How does the visit work?
The visit moves through a series of courtyards.
First Courtyard
This is the outermost part of the complex and serves as an introduction to the palace's scale.
This area also contains the Hagia Irene, a Byzantine building that predates Topkapi itself.
Second Courtyard
The Second Courtyard was linked to important administrative functions of the Ottoman Empire.
Structures here relate to the Imperial Council, the administration and the Tower of Justice.
This is also where the entrance to the Imperial Harem is located.
Imperial Harem
The Harem was the residential area linked to the imperial family and the court's private organisation.
The space has rooms, corridors and courtyards used by people occupying different positions within the palace hierarchy.
The current combined ticket for foreign visitors already includes the Harem.
To better understand private life inside the palace, this is one of the areas most worth including in your visit.
Third Courtyard
The Third Courtyard was linked to the most private areas of government and the sultan's life.
Spaces here include the Audience Hall, former areas of the palace school and some of the main collections.
Imperial Treasury
The Treasury brings together jewels, ceremonial weapons and objects related to the Ottoman court.
Among the best-known pieces are the Spoonmaker's Diamond and the Topkapi Dagger.
Room availability can change, so check which sections are open on the day.
Sacred Relics
The Sacred Relics collection carries historical and religious significance linked mainly to the Islamic tradition.
Respect the specific behaviour and photography rules in this area.
Fourth Courtyard
The Fourth Courtyard brings together gardens, terraces and pavilions used by the sultan and the court.
Structures here include the Baghdad and Revan pavilions.
After several halls and collections, this section changes the pace of the visit and offers some of the complex's best views.
Hagia Irene
The Hagia Irene, also called Aya İrini, stands within the Topkapi grounds and predates the palace.
The current combined ticket for foreign visitors now includes access to the church along with Topkapi and the Harem.
If it's open, it's worth including, since it represents a different historical layer of Constantinople.
How much does it cost to visit Topkapi?
The combined ticket for foreign visitors costs:
2,750 TL
and includes:
- Topkapi Palace;
- the Harem;
- Hagia Irene.
At the exchange rate checked in September 2026:
2,750 TL ≈ R$288
Prices subject to change.
Is there free entry?
Free entry: children aged 0 to 6.
For foreign adults, access to the complex's main areas is paid.
Topkapi Palace opening hours
The currently stated hours are:
- opens: 9am;
- ticket office: until 5pm;
- visit ends: approximately 5:30pm;
- Tuesday: closed.
Arriving close to opening is the best strategy to take in the complex with enough time.
How much time should you allow?
Allow roughly 3 to 4 hours.
Topkapi has several different areas and a fair amount of walking. Anyone wanting to see the Harem, Treasury, Sacred Relics, courtyards, pavilions and Hagia Irene without rushing can easily use up much of a morning or afternoon.
Don't try to squeeze the palace between two attractions with tight schedules.
How to get to Topkapi Palace
Topkapi is in Sultanahmet, near Hagia Sophia.
The T1 tram is the most practical option for many visitors.
The most useful stops are:
Sultanahmet: convenient for combining the palace with Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque or the Basilica Cistern.
Gülhane: also nearby, and can be more convenient depending on where you're coming from.
The address is:
Cankurtaran Mah. Babı Hümayun Cad. No: 1, Sultanahmet/Fatih.
Museum Pass
Different tourist passes are used in Istanbul, and coverage can vary.
Before buying, confirm specifically whether your chosen pass includes:
- Topkapi Palace;
- the Harem;
- Hagia Irene.
Don't assume every pass offers exactly the same access.
What to combine with Topkapi?
Topkapi sits in one of the easiest areas of the city to combine attractions on foot.
Hagia Sophia: just a few minutes away.
Basilica Cistern: also nearby and needs far less time.
Blue Mosque: in the same Sultanahmet area.
The main thing to avoid is trying to see all of them in the same window of time. Topkapi alone deserves several hours.
Are Topkapi and Dolmabahçe the same thing?
No.
Topkapi Palace was the political centre and residence of the sultans for centuries.
In the 19th century, the court moved to Dolmabahçe Palace, built on the shores of the Bosphorus with a very different architectural style.
They are distinct attractions representing different periods of Ottoman history.
