Nara was Japan's first permanent capital and is known for its deer that roam freely through the city's central park. It is one of the favourite destinations for a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka, with dozens of historic temples and shrines concentrated in a compact area.
The city is about 45 minutes from Kyoto and 50 minutes from Osaka by train, making it easy to include in any Japan itinerary. In a single day, it is possible to visit the main highlights at a comfortable pace.
1-day Nara itinerary: what to do
Day by day
- Single day — Nara Park, Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha and historic centre
Single day — Nara and the deer park
Morning
Getting to Nara
From Kyoto, the journey takes about 45 minutes by train (Kintetsu Nara Line). From Osaka, about 50 minutes. Leaving early helps to enjoy the park before it gets too busy.
Nara Park
Nara Park is the heart of the city and the most famous spot in the entire area. Hundreds of deer (shika) roam freely through the park — they are considered messengers of the gods in Shinto tradition and coexist peacefully with visitors.
Afternoon
Todai-ji Temple
One of Japan's most impressive temples, housing one of the largest Buddha statues in the country. The main building is considered the world's largest wooden structure. Entry to the outer precinct is free; the temple interior has an admission fee.
Kasuga Taisha
A Shinto shrine famous for the hundreds of stone lanterns lining the approach path. It is one of Nara's most photogenic spots, especially in the more wooded part of the park.
Nara historic centre
The area between the park and the station has small shops, restaurants and local cafés. It is a good place to walk around and try local food before heading back.
Late afternoon
Walk through the park and return
Enjoy the final moments by strolling through the park, watching the deer at dusk and grabbing a coffee before catching the train back to Kyoto or Osaka.
