Tatev Monastery occupies one of the most dramatic positions of any monastery in Armenia. The 9th century complex is built on the edge of a cliff more than 300 metres above the Vorotan River gorge, in the south of the country. From a distance, it seems impossible that a human construction could exist there, let alone one of the most important religious and intellectual centres of medieval Armenian history.

The most impactful way to reach the monastery is via Wings of Tatev, a cable car 5.7 km long that held the record for the world's longest double-cabin cable car for years. The crossing takes about 12 minutes and offers aerial views over the Vorotan gorge that are as impressive as the monastery itself. It is also possible to arrive by road, but the cable car transforms the arrival into part of the experience.

The monastery was founded in 895 AD and functioned as one of Armenia's main medieval universities, with a school of philosophy and manuscript illumination. The complex has three churches, a refectory, a bell tower, a mausoleum and the Gavazan Column, an oscillating column that served as an earthquake alert system.

Quick facts

Is Tatev Monastery worth visiting?

Yes, it is one of the most impressive places in all of Armenia. The position of the monastery on the gorge, the quality of the medieval constructions and the crossing by cable car create an experience that has no equivalent in the country. It is the main reason to include Goris in your itinerary.

What is Tatev Monastery?

The complex was founded by Bishop Soukias in 895 AD and grew over the centuries to become one of the largest religious and educational centres of medieval Armenia. It is said to have had more than 1,000 monks and one of the country's main philosophy schools.

The monastery suffered attacks and destruction throughout history, including Mongol invasions in the 14th century and earthquakes, but was always rebuilt and maintained its religious importance to this day. The Gavazan Column, an 8-metre column erected in the main courtyard, is one of the most ancient curiosities of the complex: it oscillates slightly when pushed and was designed to alert monks to imminent earthquakes.

How to get there

How the visit works

Entry fees

Tatev Monastery is free to visit. The main cost is the Wings of Tatev cable car, which costs around 7,000 AMD per person (return, ~€16). Those who arrive by road don't pay for the cable car, but miss the aerial experience over the gorge.

How long to spend

1h30 is sufficient to explore the monastery at a relaxed pace. For those using the cable car, add 30 minutes (return) to the count. In total, allow 2 to 2h30 for the complete excursion.
