Wings of Tatev is not just the means of transport to the monastery, it is an attraction in its own right. With 5.7 km of length and cabins that cross the Vorotan River gorge at hundreds of metres above the ground, the crossing takes 12 minutes of pure aerial views over southern Armenia. The mountains, the valley and the river far below create a panorama that no road can offer.

The cable car was inaugurated in 2010 and held for years the record for the world's longest double-cabin cable car, a recognition that entered the Guinness Book. The cabins depart from the Halidzor station and arrive directly at the Tatev Monastery complex, eliminating the need for a winding dirt road that existed before construction.

For those visiting Tatev Monastery, Wings of Tatev is the recommended way to get there. The road exists and is also a valid option, but the aerial view of the Vorotan gorge transforms the arrival into an experience that complements the visit to the medieval monastery.

Quick facts

Is Wings of Tatev worth taking?

Yes, it is one of Armenia's most unique experiences. The view over the Vorotan gorge during the crossing is spectacular and impossible to replicate by road. For those already going to Tatev Monastery, the cable car is not an extra cost, it is a central part of the visit.

What is Wings of Tatev?

Wings of Tatev is a bicable cable car with 25-person cabins connecting the village of Halidzor to the Tatev Monastery plateau. Inaugurated in October 2010, the project was partly funded by the Armenian government and partly by philanthropic businessman Ruben Vardanyan as an investment in southern Armenia's tourism.

The cable car route crosses the Vorotan River gorge at its most spectacular point, with rocky walls hundreds of metres high, dense vegetation and the river running at the bottom of the valley. The cabins have wide windows that allow you to see the entire route without obstruction.

Practical tips

Final tip

Wings of Tatev is one of the most memorable experiences in southern Armenia. The 12 minutes over the Vorotan gorge pass too quickly, get on the side with the best view as soon as you enter the cabin. It is one of the most photogenic moments of the Armenia itinerary and the best possible introduction to the Tatev Monastery waiting on the other side.
