Narikala Fortress is one of Tbilisi's most important attractions and one of the best places to see the Georgian capital from above. Perched on a hilltop above Old Tbilisi, the fortress offers a sweeping view of the historic centre, the Mtkvari river, the Bridge of Peace and the surrounding mountains.
For first-time visitors to Tbilisi, Narikala is an essential stop. Beyond its historical value, the site helps you understand the city's geography — with the ancient centre at the foot of the hill and the modern districts spreading along the river.

Is Narikala Fortress worth visiting?
Yes, absolutely. Narikala Fortress is one of Tbilisi's best free attractions, combining history, panoramic views and easy access from the historic centre.
Even if you have limited time in the city, it is worth including the fortress in your itinerary. The ascent can be made by cable car or on foot, and the view from the top is one of the most memorable images of the Georgian capital.
What is Narikala Fortress?
Narikala Fortress is an ancient fortress located on a hilltop in Tbilisi. The structure has gone through different historical periods and today what remains are walls, ruins and open areas with views over the city.
The fortress is close to the Mother of Georgia statue and to Abanotubani, the sulphur baths neighbourhood. It therefore combines very well with a walk through Tbilisi's historic centre.
How to get to Narikala Fortress
The most convenient way to get there is by cable car from Rike Park, near the Bridge of Peace. The main options are:
- Cable car from Rike Park — the easiest and quickest option, with a beautiful view during the ascent
- Walk from Old Tbilisi — possible for those who enjoy climbing on foot, but requires more effort
- Taxi or Bolt to a nearby point — can help, but you will still need to walk part of the way
The best combination is to go up by cable car and then walk back down towards Abanotubani or Old Tbilisi.
How the visit works
The visit is straightforward and does not require a guide. You can walk through the open areas of the fortress, look at the walls and enjoy the natural viewpoints. The circuit includes:
- View of the historic centre — one of the best perspectives of Old Tbilisi
- View of the Mtkvari river — with the Bridge of Peace and Rike Park in the background
- Mother of Georgia — a statue near the fortress, one of Tbilisi's symbols
- Descent to Abanotubani — a path connecting the fortress to the sulphur baths neighbourhood
The site has uneven terrain, so comfortable footwear is recommended.

How long to spend
Allow 1 to 2 hours to visit Narikala Fortress at a relaxed pace, take photographs, walk to the Mother of Georgia statue and descend towards the historic centre. If you go up in the late afternoon for the sunset, you may want to stay a little longer.
Best time to visit
Each time of day offers a different experience:
- Late afternoon — best light for photos and views of the city bathed in the setting sun
- Early morning — fewer visitors and a more pleasant temperature
- Evening — a good option for seeing the illuminated Tbilisi, but walk carefully on the uneven sections
Avoid the hottest part of summer days, as the area is open with little shade.
