Cappadocia in 3 Days: Complete Itinerary

Complete 3-day itinerary through Cappadocia, from Göreme to hot-air balloons, Uçhisar, underground cities and the region's main valleys

Last updated: September 2026

Cappadocia completely changes the pace of a trip through Turkey. This isn't a single city, but a region made up of small towns, villages, valleys, volcanic formations, rock-cut churches and ancient underground cities.

In 3 days in Cappadocia, you can see some of the most important places without turning the itinerary into a sequence of quick stops. The best strategy is to choose a practical base, organise the attractions by area, and leave more than one morning open for the balloons, since flights depend on weather conditions.

This itinerary uses Göreme as a base, dedicates one day to the Open Air Museum and Uçhisar, and sets aside another for an underground city and some of the main valleys.

How this Cappadocia itinerary was planned

Cappadocia requires a different kind of planning from Istanbul. The attractions are spread out, and many of them sit outside urban centres, so it's important to decide in advance how you'll get around.

The first day is calmer, with arrival in Göreme, a walk around the area and a first look at the landscape. The second day starts with the balloons and combines the Göreme Open Air Museum with Uçhisar.

The third day is set aside for one of the major underground cities and some of the main valleys. This split keeps the itinerary balanced and avoids trying to see every part of Cappadocia in just a few hours.

Cappadocia in 3 days: overview

  • Day 1: arrival via Nevşehir or Kayseri, Göreme and a viewpoint in the late afternoon.
  • Day 2: sunrise balloons, Göreme Open Air Museum, Uçhisar and Uçhisar Castle.
  • Day 3: Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı, Pigeon Valley, Love Valley and Red Valley or Rose Valley.
Day 1

Arrival in Cappadocia and first afternoon in Göreme

The first day can be calmer, especially for anyone arriving after a flight from Istanbul. The idea is to avoid packing in major attractions right after the airport and to use the first few hours getting to know your base for the trip.

Airport and arrival in the region

Nevşehir or Kayseri are the two airports normally used to reach Cappadocia. Nevşehir is closer to the central area, while Kayseri also offers good flight options and can end up being more convenient depending on schedules and prices.

Choosing between the two airports doesn't have to shape the rest of the itinerary. What matters most is checking the transfer time to your hotel and comparing schedules before booking your flight.

First hours in Göreme

Göreme is one of the most practical bases for a first trip to Cappadocia. The town concentrates hotels, restaurants, tour agencies and much of the tourist infrastructure, besides being close to several of this itinerary's attractions.

On the first day, it's worth walking around the centre, taking in the rock formations and starting to get a feel for the landscape. It's also a good opportunity to confirm your transfer, balloon ride and any tours booked for the following days.

Late afternoon at the viewpoint

Göreme Viewpoint (Sunset Point) sits above the town and offers a wide view of Göreme and the region's formations. It's a good way to end the first day, since it doesn't require a long visit and gives you a first panoramic view of Cappadocia. There may be a small local access fee, so it's worth confirming on the day.

The same viewpoint can also be visited at sunrise to watch the balloons when flights are authorised.

Day 2

Balloons, Göreme Open Air Museum and Uçhisar

The second day brings together some of Cappadocia's best-known experiences. The morning starts very early because of the balloons and continues with one of the region's main historic attractions.

Where to see the balloons without taking the ride

Göreme at sunrise: on days when flights are authorised, the balloons usually rise close to sunrise and can be seen from different points around the region. You don't need to take the balloon ride to watch the spectacle.

Anyone staying at a hotel with a rooftop or terrace facing the valleys can watch the balloons directly from the hotel, depending on the location and the flight direction that morning.

Another option is to head up to the Göreme Viewpoint (Sunset Point) before sunrise. The viewpoint sits above the town and offers a wide view of the valleys, making it one of the most practical spots to try to watch the balloons.

Since flight direction changes with the wind, no specific view can be guaranteed every day. Having three mornings available in Cappadocia increases your chances of seeing the balloons even if there's a cancellation or a change in conditions.

Hot-air balloon ride

Hot-air balloon ride is one of Cappadocia's most sought-after experiences, but it depends entirely on weather conditions and flight authorisation. That's why it's worth booking for one of the first mornings of your trip, leaving the following ones as a buffer in case the first flight is cancelled.

In 2026, many shared flights fall approximately in the 8,400 to 16,900 TL per person range (approx. R$890 to R$1,790). The price is dynamic and can vary a lot depending on the season, availability, flight duration, chosen company and number of passengers in the basket.

Even if you don't plan to pay for the flight, you can still enjoy sunrise by watching the balloons from your hotel rooftop or the Göreme Viewpoint.

Göreme Open Air Museum

Göreme Open Air Museum is one of Cappadocia's most important historic attractions. The complex brings together churches, chapels and former religious spaces carved directly into the rock, many of them preserving paintings and frescoes from the Byzantine period. The ticket for foreign visitors costs about 1,126 TL (approx. R$119).

Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) is inside the Open Air Museum complex but requires an additional ticket. The church is known for its well-preserved frescoes and costs about 338 TL (approx. R$36) on top of the main ticket.

Uçhisar

Uçhisar is a small town set in one of the highest parts of Cappadocia. Its elevated position offers different perspectives of the valleys and makes it a good continuation after the Open Air Museum.

It's worth walking around the streets a little before or after the castle. The landscape changes as you gain height and helps you better appreciate the scale of the formations surrounding Göreme.

Uçhisar Castle

Uçhisar Castle towers over the town and is a huge rock formation marked by old carved spaces. From the highest accessible point, the view stretches across much of the region and works especially well under a clear sky. The ticket costs about 400 TL (approx. R$42). Since the rate is set locally, it's worth confirming the price at the entrance.

Sunset in Göreme

Göreme at sunset: if you're still up for it at the end of the day, the Göreme Viewpoint can be visited again. The experience is quite different from the morning: the balloons are gone, but the late-afternoon light highlights the formations and the colours of the landscape.

You don't have to return to the same viewpoint. If you'd rather, you can spend the late afternoon in Uçhisar or save sunset for Red Valley the following day.

Day 3

Underground cities and Cappadocia's main valleys

Derinkuyu Underground City in Cappadocia
Derinkuyu, one of Cappadocia's largest underground cities
Red Valley in Cappadocia
Red Valley, known for the reddish tones of Cappadocia's rock formations

The final full day is ideal for exploring areas further from Göreme. The main thing to avoid is trying to visit two underground cities and every valley in the same day.

It's worth choosing Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı and then building a sequence with just a few of the valleys.

Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı?

Derinkuyu is one of Cappadocia's largest and best-known underground cities. It has several levels carved underground, with narrow corridors, storage areas, rooms, ventilation shafts and spaces used for community life. The visit passes through narrow, enclosed areas, so it may not be comfortable for anyone with claustrophobia. The ticket for foreign visitors costs about 732 TL (approx. R$77).

Kaymaklı is another large underground city and sits closer to Göreme than Derinkuyu. It has tunnels, rooms, storage areas and different underground levels, offering a similar experience without needing to visit both on the same trip. The ticket for foreign visitors also costs about 732 TL (approx. R$77).

For a three-day trip, choosing just Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu is usually enough.

Cappadocia's valleys

After the underground city, the rest of the day can be dedicated to the valleys. Many public viewpoints and trails don't require a general ticket, but parking, private areas or local services may charge separately.

Pigeon Valley lies between Göreme and Uçhisar and has numerous pigeon shelters carved into the rock. For centuries, these spaces were used by local residents and eventually became a visual feature of the valley. The area has viewpoints and trails, so you don't need to walk the entire valley to include it in your itinerary.

Love Valley is known for the large vertical rock formations that gave the valley its popular name. It's near Göreme and has some of the region's most recognisable scenery. There are viewpoints accessible by road and trails for anyone who wants to walk among the formations.

Devrent Valley (Imaginary Valley) lies between Avanos and Ürgüp and offers something different from the other valleys. The highlight is the natural formations themselves, which resemble animals or objects depending on the angle you view them from. One of the most famous formations resembles a camel. It's an interesting stop, but can be optional if your day is running tight.

Red Valley takes its name from the reddish tones of its rock formations and is near Göreme and Çavuşin. The late-afternoon light intensifies the colours, making it one of the best options to end the itinerary. There are trails and viewpoints, so the time needed depends on how much you plan to walk.

Rose Valley sits next to Red Valley and features formations with pinkish tones that change with the light. It's also one of Cappadocia's most popular areas for hiking. Besides the scenery, there are small churches and old structures carved into the rock.

A practical sequence for the last day

To organise the day without turning the itinerary into a rush, a balanced sequence would be:

Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu → Pigeon Valley → Love Valley → Red Valley or Rose Valley in the late afternoon.

Devrent can replace another valley if the Imaginary Valley formations interest you more.

Getting around Cappadocia

In Cappadocia, it isn't a good idea to build your itinerary relying only on Uber or similar apps. The attractions are spread across the region, and many are outside urban areas.

The most practical options are:

  • renting a car, picking it up at the airport and returning it when you leave Cappadocia;
  • hiring a private driver for your day-to-day travel;
  • booking private or organised tours or transfers.

For anyone who prefers independence, picking up a car at the Nevşehir or Kayseri airport and heading straight to Göreme tends to work very well. Anyone who doesn't want to drive can book the airport-to-hotel transfer in advance and use a private driver or tours on days with more distant attractions.

What to prioritize in Cappadocia in 3 days

If I had to trim this itinerary down to the essentials, I'd keep Göreme, the sunrise balloons, the Göreme Open Air Museum, Uçhisar, one underground city and two or three valleys.

The main thing is not to turn Cappadocia into a checklist of viewpoints. The region works better when there's time to walk, take in the formations and enjoy the landscape without getting back in the car every few minutes.

Between Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı, choosing just one is enough. Among the valleys, Pigeon Valley, Love Valley and Red or Rose Valley form a great combination for a first trip.

What can be optional in this itinerary

  • The hot-air balloon ride can be dropped if it's outside your budget.
  • Even without flying, you can watch the balloons from a hotel rooftop with a good view or from the Göreme Viewpoint.
  • There's no need to see both Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı on the same trip.
  • Devrent Valley can be dropped if day three is too packed.
  • There's no need to do long hikes in both Red Valley and Rose Valley on the same day.
  • Uçhisar Castle can be seen from outside only if climbing to the top isn't a priority.
  • The Dark Church is optional within the Göreme Open Air Museum.

Mistakes to avoid in Cappadocia

The first mistake is building your itinerary relying on Uber. The attractions are spread out, and having a car, driver or organised tour makes getting around much easier.

Another mistake is booking only one morning for the balloons and treating the flight as guaranteed. Operations depend on the weather and can be cancelled, so three days give you a much better margin.

It's also not worth visiting both Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı just to add more attractions. The experiences are similar, and the time is better spent in the valleys.

Finally, trying to see every valley in a single day ends up reducing Cappadocia to a sequence of parking lots and quick photos. Choosing fewer places makes the itinerary far more enjoyable.

Trip planning for Cappadocia: essential tips

Before arriving in the region, it's worth sorting out transport, the balloon ride and a few main attractions in advance. Cappadocia works much better when your travel logistics are settled before the trip.

ORGANISING YOUR DAYS

  • Use Göreme as your itinerary base.
  • Leave more than one morning free for the balloons.
  • Choose just one underground city.
  • End one of the days at a viewpoint for sunset.
Final tip: in 3 days, Cappadocia works much better once you accept that you don't need to see every valley and viewpoint. Choose a good base, leave room for the balloons, and combine one underground city with a few valleys to enjoy the region at a calmer pace.
