Fenghuang, the "phoenix town", was one of the most special places of my trip through China, and the reason is simple: the night. It's a very well-preserved ancient town on the banks of the Tuojiang river, famous for its stilt houses, wooden bridges and stone streets, with a strong presence of Miao and Tujia culture.
I arrived from Furong, on a simple stretch that works well for anyone touring Hunan. I got there at midday, enjoyed the whole afternoon in town, went back to the hotel for a shower and headed out again to experience the night, which is the highlight. I slept in Fenghuang, and I recommend it: don't do it as a day trip.
A handy practical note: when I visited, I didn't pay anything to enter the historic town. Access to the old centre was free, and only a few specific attractions (temples, museums and former residences) had a separate ticket. It's worth checking on the day, because Fenghuang has charged a town entry fee in the past, but on my visit the centre was open.
Fenghuang Ancient Town 1-day itinerary: what to do day by day
Daily itinerary
- Morning, Historic centre, Tuojiang river and main historic residences
- Afternoon, Towers, city walls, museums and viewpoints
- Night, Illuminated river, historic bridges and traditional atmosphere
Day 1: Fenghuang Ancient Town
Morning
Tuojiang River Walk
The walk along the river, with the stilt houses reflected in the water, is Fenghuang's postcard view. A tip that makes a difference: the river has walkable paths on both banks, so the ideal is to go along one side and come back on the other. That way you see the town from two angles, with the lights reflected in the water and the stretches of old wall that still stand near the river.
Rainbow Bridge (Hongqiao)
A covered wooden bridge that is one of the town's most recognisable landmarks, with traditional architecture and a privileged view of the river.
Shen Congwen's Former Residence
Preserved home of one of China's most important writers, with original objects and historical context about the town.
Xiong Xiling Former Residence
Historic residence of a prominent Chinese political figure, with well-preserved traditional architecture.
Yang Family Temple
Ancestral temple representing family tradition and the classical architecture of the region.
Afternoon
West Gate Tower
Historic defensive tower with views over the river and part of the old city walls.
South Gate (Nanhuamen)
One of the historic gateways that once provided access to the walled city, preserving its original style.
East Gate Tower
One of the best-preserved points in Fenghuang, ideal for photos and for understanding the layout of the ancient city.
Fenghuang Square
Central square with local activity, statues and access to typical restaurants.
Fenghuang Ancient City Museum
Museum presenting the history of the town and the ethnic minorities of the region, including the Miao and Tujia peoples.
Tuojiang Rock Crossing
I crossed the famous stepping stones over the river. It's a simple but fun experience, and one of the symbols of Fenghuang. There were a few people taking photos, but nothing that got in the way. Worth doing at least once.
Huilong Tower Stilt Houses
The most famous cluster of stilt houses, representing traditional riverside architecture.
Duocui Tower
Observation tower with a panoramic view of the town and the river.
Wanshou Palace
Historic palace with rich architectural details, once used for traditional ceremonies.
Night
Tuojiang River Night Walk
Here's the best of Fenghuang. The town is already beautiful during the day, but once the lanterns come on everything changes: the illuminated stilt houses reflecting in the river create an incredible scene. I also took the traditional boat ride, which isn't long but gives a different perspective of the houses and bridges, even more beautiful at night with the lights on the water. Walking slowly along the banks at night was one of the parts I enjoyed most of the whole trip.
Rainbow Bridge at Night
The illuminated bridge becomes one of the most beautiful scenes in the town after dark.
Riverside Dinner
Dinner by the river with local dishes, including spiced fish and regional cuisine.
Huilong Tower Stilt Houses at Night
The illuminated stilt houses are one of Fenghuang's most iconic sights. There are restaurants and bars along the river, but the atmosphere stays pleasant and calm. It was one of the most photogenic places of the whole trip.
Logistics tip for the next destination
A tip I'd have loved to know beforehand: from Fenghuang there's no practical direct connection to Xi'an. The solution I found, which worked well, was to take a train to Tongren and, from there, a flight to Xi'an. If your itinerary continues to Xi'an, book that train + flight in advance.
Practical tips for visiting Fenghuang Ancient Town
