The Ark of Bukhara was one of the attractions that impressed me most in Bukhara, and what struck me most was its size. It's a huge fortress, and when you get close to the entrance and see those walls, you immediately feel it was a very important place in the city's history. For centuries it was the residence of the rulers and the political centre of Bukhara.
It's right in the historic centre, so it's easy to fit into your itinerary. Let me tell you how my visit went and what I think is worth it.

What is the Ark of Bukhara
The Ark of Bukhara is an ancient fortress that worked as a city within the city. Its origins go back more than a thousand years, and it was continuously expanded over the centuries.
Within the walls lived the rulers, officials, guards and the whole administrative structure of power in Bukhara.
Is the Ark of Bukhara worth visiting?
For me it was. It's one of the most important attractions in Bukhara and helps you understand the city's history. I'll be honest on one point: the fortress impresses more from the outside, when you see those immense walls, than in some of the interior areas. But even so I enjoyed the visit, mainly because I like to explore places at a relaxed pace, and the historical context makes it worthwhile.
How to get to the Ark of Bukhara
The Ark is in the historic centre of Bukhara. I got there easily on foot, like almost everything in the city, since the attractions are close to each other within the historic area. If you stay in the centre, as I did, you arrive in a few minutes' walk.
How the visit works
Entry is paid and the visit is done walking through the interior areas of the fortress. I went in and visited every part that was open: I walked through the courtyards, the museums and the interior rooms. It's not just a fortress that looks nice from outside, it also has spaces that help tell the story of Bukhara.
What to see at the Ark of Bukhara
During the visit, you can explore:
- Inner courtyards, open spaces connecting the different areas of the fortress
- Museums and historic rooms, exhibitions about the history of Bukhara and Uzbekistan
- Administrative structures, places where political decisions were made
- Main entrance, with the sloping ramp and the historic gates; it was one of the spots I most enjoyed photographing
How long to spend
Set aside 1 to 2 hours. That's roughly the time I spent there, exploring the interior spaces and museums without rushing, which is how I like to visit.
What to expect from the experience
The Ark impresses mainly through its scale and historical importance. As I said, the first impression from outside, with those enormous walls, is the most striking part. Inside, the highlight is the historical context more than the decoration, unlike other more ornate monuments in the city.
Practical tips
- Combine the visit with the Bolo Haouz Mosque, which is right in front
- Go in the morning to avoid heat and crowds
- Bring cash for the ticket
- Bring water, especially in summer
