The Ark of Bukhara was one of the attractions that impressed me most in Bukhara, and what struck me most was its size. It's a huge fortress, and when you get close to the entrance and see those walls, you immediately feel it was a very important place in the city's history. For centuries it was the residence of the rulers and the political centre of Bukhara.
Its location in the historic centre makes it easy to include in an itinerary. This guide explains how my visit went and what I found most worthwhile.

What is the Ark of Bukhara
The Ark of Bukhara is an ancient fortress that worked as a city within the city. Its origins go back more than a thousand years, and it was continuously expanded over the centuries.
Within the walls lived the rulers, officials, guards and the whole administrative structure of power in Bukhara.
Is the Ark of Bukhara worth visiting?
For me, it was. The Ark is one of Bukhara's most important attractions and helps explain the city's history. I found the enormous outer walls more impressive than some of the interior areas, but I still enjoyed exploring the fortress slowly and learning about its historical role.
How to get to the Ark of Bukhara
The Ark is in the historic centre of Bukhara. I got there easily on foot, like almost everything in the city, since the attractions are close to each other within the historic area. If you stay in the centre, as I did, you arrive in a few minutes' walk.
How the visit works
Admission is charged, and visitors explore the accessible parts of the fortress on foot. I walked through every area that was open, including the courtyards, museums and interior rooms. Beyond its imposing exterior, these spaces help tell the story of Bukhara.
What to see at the Ark of Bukhara
During the visit, you can explore:
- Inner courtyards, open spaces connecting the different areas of the fortress
- Museums and historic rooms, exhibitions about the history of Bukhara and Uzbekistan
- Administrative structures, places where political decisions were made
- Main entrance, with the sloping ramp and the historic gates; it was one of the spots I most enjoyed photographing
How long to spend
Set aside 1 to 2 hours. That's roughly the time I spent there, exploring the interior spaces and museums without rushing, which is how I like to visit.
What to expect from the experience
The Ark impresses mainly through its scale and historical importance. As I said, the first impression from outside, with those enormous walls, is the most striking part. Inside, the highlight is the historical context more than the decoration, unlike other more ornate monuments in the city.
Practical tips
- Combine the visit with the Bolo Haouz Mosque, which is right in front
- Go in the morning to avoid heat and crowds
- Bring cash for the ticket
- Bring water, especially in summer
