The Poi-Kalyan Complex was one of the most beautiful spots I saw in Bukhara. It's the main architectural ensemble in the city and brings together some of the most iconic monuments of the ancient Silk Road in one place. My hotel was about a minute away, so I was lucky enough to see the complex at various times of day, and that made all the difference.
It's the historic heart of Bukhara and, for me, a must-see. Let me tell you how I made the most of the visit by day and by night.

What is the Poi-Kalyan Complex
The Poi-Kalyan Complex is an ensemble made up of three main structures, located in the same space:
- Kalyan Minaret
- Kalyan Mosque
- Mir-i-Arab Madrasah
This ensemble forms one of the most famous scenes in Bukhara and represents the religious and cultural centre of the city over the centuries.
How my visit went
I went into the Kalyan Mosque and got right up close to the minaret, it wasn't just a quick look from outside. I walked through the complex slowly to take in the details. What impressed me most was the whole ensemble working together: the minaret, the mosque and the madrassas around it. It's one of those places that truly gives you the feeling of the Silk Road, and for me it was one of the most beautiful spots in Bukhara.
What to see at the Poi-Kalyan Complex
During the visit, you can observe:
- Kalyan Minaret, a 47-metre minaret built in 1127, one of the most important symbols of Bukhara and a landmark of the Silk Road
- Kalyan Mosque, a mosque that can hold thousands of people, with a large central courtyard and well-preserved traditional Islamic architecture
- Mir-i-Arab Madrasah, a historic madrassa still in operation, one of the most important religious institutions in Central Asia
Historical importance
The Poi-Kalyan Complex was for centuries the religious centre of Bukhara, playing a key role in the cultural life of the city.
It's one of the most representative sites of the Silk Road and one of the best-preserved architectural ensembles in Uzbekistan.
How long to spend
Set aside 30 to 60 minutes to see the complex. But my tip is to come back at different times: I saw it by day and by night, and it's really worth it, because the experience changes completely.
By day and by night: why see both
Since my hotel was so close, I took the chance to visit at different times, and I highly recommend doing the same. By day you can better observe the architectural details, the tiles and the size of the minaret. At night, with the lighting, the complex becomes even more beautiful and takes on a special atmosphere. The illuminated Kalyan Minaret is one of the most impressive scenes of the Silk Road.
Best time to visit
- Morning, less movement and soft light to explore at a relaxed pace
- Late afternoon, the best golden light for photos of the facade and the minaret
- Night, one of the most impressive moments, with the lighting that highlights all the complex's architecture
Practical tips
- Visit at the beginning and end of the day for completely different experiences
- Combine it with other nearby spots, like Lyabi-Hauz and the Ark of Bukhara
- Set aside time to see the complex illuminated at night, it's really worth it
