Kazbegi in 2 days: Gergeti Trinity Church, Ananuri and the Caucasus mountains

Complete 2-day itinerary through Kazbegi with the Georgian Military Highway, Ananuri Fortress, Gudauri and Gergeti Trinity Church high in the Caucasus mountains

Kazbegi, also known as Stepantsminda, is one of Georgia's most impressive regions and one of the main destinations for those who want to experience the Caucasus mountains. Located north of Tbilisi near the Russian border, the area became famous for the view of Gergeti Trinity Church, an isolated church perched on a hilltop with Mount Kazbek behind it.

The journey between Tbilisi and Kazbegi is itself an attraction. The route follows the Georgian Military Highway, a historic road surrounded by fortresses, reservoirs, viewpoints and mountain scenery. Kazbegi is therefore not just a final destination but also one of Georgia's most beautiful road trips. In 2 days, it is possible to leave Tbilisi, visit the main stops along the road, sleep in Stepantsminda and explore Gergeti Trinity Church at a relaxed pace.

Morning

Departure from Tbilisi
The ideal is to leave Tbilisi in the morning, especially if you plan to stop at Zhinvali, Ananuri and Gudauri. The distance to Kazbegi is not huge, but the road passes through mountainous areas and travel time can vary considerably depending on the weather, traffic and number of stops. For those who want more comfort, the best option is to hire a private driver or join a tour departing from Tbilisi. It is also possible to go by marshrutka — the shared minivans used in Georgia — but in that case you lose the flexibility to stop at the main tourist spots along the road.

Zhinvali Reservoir
Usually one of the first stops on the way from Tbilisi to Kazbegi. The reservoir is surrounded by mountains and offers a very beautiful landscape, especially on clear days. It is a quick stop, but it makes for great photographs and already gives a taste of the scenery that appears throughout the Georgian Military Highway.

Ananuri Fortress
One of the most important stops on the route between Tbilisi and Kazbegi. The fortified complex sits on the banks of Zhinvali Reservoir and brings together towers, walls and ancient churches. The fortress is one of the best combinations of history and landscape along this route — medieval buildings on one side and the reservoir and mountains in the background on the other.

Afternoon

Pasanauri
A good lunch stop during the drive. The area is known as one of the traditional places to try khinkali, Georgia's famous filled dumplings. Khinkali pairs perfectly with a day on the road and turns the transfer to Kazbegi into part of the overall experience.

Gudauri Viewpoint
One of the most famous viewpoints on the Georgian Military Highway. The colourful monument sits at a high elevation with views of mountains, valleys and sections of the road. This is one of the most photogenic stops along the route. On clear days, the panorama is wide and gives a real sense of the scale of the Caucasus mountains.

Jvari Pass
A mountain pass with more dramatic scenery, especially when visibility is good. The altitude increases, the weather can change quickly and the road takes on a more alpine character. Even without a long stop, it is worth watching the landscape change as you approach Stepantsminda.

Evening

Arrival in Kazbegi / Stepantsminda
At the end of the day, arrive in Kazbegi, also known as Stepantsminda. The village is the main base for exploring the area and is surrounded by the Caucasus mountains. If the weather is clear, you can already see the mountains around you and perhaps catch a first glimpse of Gergeti Trinity Church high on the hill.

Dinner in Stepantsminda
End the day at a local restaurant. The village has simple options, guesthouses with restaurants and places with views of the mountains. After a day on the road, it is a good opportunity to try Georgian dishes and enjoy the more peaceful atmosphere of the region.

Morning

Gergeti Trinity Church
The main attraction in Kazbegi and one of Georgia's most iconic postcards. The church stands on a hill above Stepantsminda, with views of the Caucasus mountains and Mount Kazbek. The scenery is breathtaking — an ancient church in isolation, surrounded by enormous mountains and a landscape that changes constantly with the weather. On clear days, the view is one of the most beautiful in Georgia. To reach the top, there are three options: 4x4 vehicle, local taxi or hiking trail. The trail is beautiful but requires time and physical fitness — if the itinerary is tight, the 4x4 is usually the better choice.

Stepantsminda
After visiting the church, spend some time walking around Stepantsminda. The village is small but has cafés, restaurants and guesthouses with mountain views. It is a good place for a break after Gergeti — if the weather is clear, lunch with a view of Mount Kazbek is hard to beat.

Afternoon

Dariali Gorge
If time allows, include Dariali Gorge in the itinerary. The gorge is located in a mountainous area close to the Russian border and shows a wilder side of the Kazbegi region. It is an interesting extension for those who want to see more natural scenery before returning to Tbilisi. Since it is outside the village, the ideal is to visit with a driver, taxi or rental car.

Return to Tbilisi
In the late afternoon, head back to Tbilisi. The return journey takes a few hours, so it is best not to leave too late. If you are with a private driver or tour, there may still be time for a quick stop along the way, depending on the schedule. If you are travelling by marshrutka, it is important to confirm departure times in advance.
